The Magic of Marigolds

I write this as a newly retired woman! I have worked for so long doing what needed to be done and now I simply get to do what I want. What a foreign concept! Are you surprised that I want to expand the garden and open a u-pick flower section for the public??? Marigolds will have their own section, of course.
I’ve always loved marigolds. They come in such a variety of shapes, colors and sizes.
Marigolds aren’t the best smelling member of the floral world but they do have a magic all their own. Marigolds are one of the top companion plants for your garden. Here’s why...
Tomatoes: Marigolds repel nematodes that can harm tomato roots. They also attract pollinators that help tomato plants.
Eggplants: Marigolds repel nematodes that can harm eggplant roots.
Cucumbers: Marigolds help keep away many of the insects that can harm cucumbers.
Potatoes: The scent of marigolds can help deter potato pests.
Strawberries: Marigolds can help reduce nematode populations that can harm strawberry roots.
Basil: Marigolds and basil can work together to repel insects like flies, maggots, and mosquitoes.
Zinnias: Zinnias and marigolds match well in terms of sunlight requirements.
One of the top benefits of marigolds, in my opinion, is deer don’t care for them as food or for the scent. For those of us living in the South, this is a big plus! So, when you are planning out your garden this year, remember the magic of marigolds and include them in your plan! I most certainly will and if you don't care for them or don't plan to grow them yourself, then drive over to McTier Family Farm one weekend to purchase some of mine for your summer table. Spring is here!
